چکیده

A routine utilization review of our assay of high-density-lipoprotemn (HDL) cholesterol with a centrifugal analyzer (1) indicated that efficiency might be improved by an alternative HDL cholesterol method requiring less dedicated technologist time. The relatively few requests, coupled with our physicians’ expectation for turnaround, dictated that we could not use the centrifugal analyzer method efficiently. Accordingly, we made a simple adaptation of our DuPont aca (computer II with expansion modification; DuPont Co., Wilmington, DE 19898). By relacing an available aca channel for determination of cholesterol and then calibrating this modified channel to read in the concentration range 100-1400 mg/L, we adapted the aca to perform HDL cholesterol determinations without disrupting the total-cholesterol channel (2). With use of this adapted channel, the dedicated technologist time to complete an average HDL cholesterol assay run was decreased from 40 to 5 mm, not including time required for the precipitation step, which is the same for both methods. Details of the rather simple adaptation of the aca are provided for those who also may wish to consider such a change. Of the “free” channels available on our aca (LLDH, HBDH, Amy, and PCHE), the LLDH channel required the least lacing changes for this conversion to HDL cholesterol. Accordingly, the LLDH channel (no. 18) was relaced to match the channel for total cholesterol, except for two differences: (a) the “filling station control board” lacing was changed so that the diluent was drawn Designation Blank H D L

Comparison of the Du Pont aca and Dow methods for determination of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

We compared the Du Pont aca (phosphotungstate-enzymic cholesterol) and the Dow (dextran sulfate/Mg2+-enzymic cholesterol) methods for the determination of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and total cholesterol in serum from 113 patients. The aca results for both total cholesterol and HDLC were significantly greater (p less than 0.0001) than the Dow results, the aca method overestimat...

Serum Lipid Profile Alterations in Acute Leukemia Before and After Chemotherapy

Background: Serum lipids abnormalities have been observed in various forms of cancers including acute leukemia. Investigators report decreased total cholesterol and HDL, and elevated triglyceride in leukemic patients. Limited studies had been performed to discover the correlation between abnormal lipids profile and disease activity in leukemic patients in Iran. This study was done to evaluate t...

Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholestrol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios are predictors of cardiovascular risk in Iranian adults: Evidence from a population-based cross-sectional study

Background: The superiority of TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios in predicting  CVD risk is a matter of debates. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare TG/HDL-C and LDL-C to HDL-C ratios in predicting the risk of CVD events. Methods: In a population-based cross-sectional study, 567 representative participants aged 40 years or older were entered in the study in Babol, North of Iran. The...

Low high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and acute coronary syndrome in young patients admitted at a tertiary care facility

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a cardiovascular disease which is related to mortality and morbidity among the Indians predominantly in the older age group. But, recently CAD has been found more often in young population. Hence, our study aims to observe the outcomes based on various categories of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels estimated during admission at the h...

Attenuating Effect of Curcumin on Diet-induced Hypercholesterolemia in Mice

Background and Aims: Atherosclerosis is currently a chronic disease in which cholesterols accumulate in large arteries. Many genes such as liver X receptor α (LXRα) are involved in the cholesterol homeostasis. Curcumin, the main active polyphenol component derived from Curcuma longa, contribute to anti-inflammation and antioxidant in the treatment of atherosclerosis. Thus, this stud...
